An Interview With Happy Clients From a Recently Completed Project

An Interview With Happy Clients From a Recently Completed Project

An interview with happy clients…

This year, I completed a project that brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction. My clients, Lesley and Rob, kindly agreed to give me their thoughts on the whole process, as well as telling me about how they feel about it now.

Lesley and Rob had lived in their detached house for years: raised their daughters and created wonderful memories there. When their daughters moved out, the spaces didn’t feel right to them. In their words, it was time to ‘love it or list it’. They had a quote from a builder to remodel the house, and when the first contacted me they just wanted my advice on how to maximise the sale value.

But at our first meeting, I could tell that they really liked where they live – on a great road with lovely neighbours. And I could see how easily the things they didn’t like could be fixed.

So, I challenged them on whether they really did want to move to a new house. If they were going to spend money remodelling the house, why didn’t they just adapt it to suit their lives, rather than trying to imagine some unknown house buyer’s needs?

Jen:

So, Lesley and Rob, it’s been about a year since that first meeting. Can you remember how you felt about it at the time?

Lesley and Rob:

I think we felt completely fed up and at a stalemate.  We just couldn’t really envisage how the house could become somewhere that could give us what we were looking for – a feeling of space and contemporary styling and so we were pretty much in the ‘list it’ mindset.

Jen:

We started off with a chat about your likes and dislikes, what you wanted each room to do, how you wanted them to make you feel, and even where your individual styles differed. Sometimes people expect my designs to be all about ‘current trends’, or just my own personal style. If I just did that, I’d be constantly churning out the same design. And where’s the fun in that?

A few weeks later, I came back to you with my designs for your home, including mood boards, floor plans, swatches, samples and a full shopping list of products (just in case you wanted to project manage the room restyles yourself).

How well had I hit the brief? How did those initial designs make you feel? Could you visualise how your home was going to look?

Lesley and Rob:

I remember feeling very emotional about it, as I couldn’t really believe that you could help us make a space that we could enjoy and be proud of.  We were particularly blown away by the fact that you’d seen a few pictures on the Pinterest board that you encouraged us to use, and you were able to succinctly sum up exactly what we liked, even though we weren’t able to articulate it ourselves!

Jen:

A memorable moment for me was when I presented a blush pink accent colour to you both. I knew it was a bit out of your comfort zone, but you went for it straight away. Basically, you trusted me to make that decision. Why was that?

Lesley and Rob:

Early on in the process, Rob and I decided that we would put our trust in you, even if we weren’t 100% sure ourselves.  We decided there wasn’t much point in engaging a professional and then overruling your ideas.  You’d already proven that you could hone in on what it was we liked and you’d chosen colours and schemes that we certainly wouldn’t have chosen left to our own devices – and you’d pleasantly surprised us!  The introduction of the blush pink is a good example of that.  It was definitely not a colour we would have chosen but not only have we been delighted with how it works, everyone who’s seen it has been really surprised and impressed!

Jen:

I offer two main services: design only, or design and project manage. I love to turn designs into reality, so project managing is always my preferred way of working, which is what you went for. How did you find that process? Any memorable moments for you?

Lesley and Rob:

We were impressed that leaving so much of the process to you really created such a fun and stress-free experience.  The other thing we remember is how infectiously excited and positive you were when you arrived at the house with things.  We also loved the fact that you weren’t rigid in your approach.  We had said originally that we didn’t want a new kitchen and you agreed and were very happy to work with that but as the project progressed, we seemed to all move towards the idea that a new kitchen was actually the best way forward and you were so good at helping us get what we didn’t know we actually wanted!

Jen:

We ended up remodelling your entire ground floor: moving walls to create a new lounge, a utility room, a gorgeous new open plan kitchen diner, and we turned your old conservatory into a new living space. We redecorated throughout, added new bespoke window dressings and furniture, with lighting and accessories, all of which created a warm and inviting home.

The complete restyle transformed your home and with it, how you felt about it. It was lovely to hear you enthusiastically referring to your home as being “Jenified!”

After you’ve been living with your ‘Jenified’ home for a few months. How do you feel about it now? What’s it like to live in?

Lesley and Rob:

We absolutely LOVE our ‘Jenified’ home! Almost every day we comment on what a positive impact it’s had on our lives and how very glad we are that we got you involved.  It’s difficult to believe the difference and how you’ve really managed to make all of our available space work for us.  It is such a relaxing and enjoyable environment now and we are so happy here!

Jen:

Finally, some people think that having an interior designer work on your home is an expensive luxury. What’s your take on that?

Lesley and Rob:

We probably would have agreed with them before, but we can honestly say that you saved us money.  We have made some pretty expensive mistakes in the past with various items of furniture and have been left unsatisfied with the result.  What really impressed us was that you offer such a flexible service and the clever way you encouraged us to spend wisely.  For example, we have some beautiful bespoke items that add a real touch of luxury to our home but we also have plenty of things from Ikea, Dunelm and other everyday stores.  What you also did for us, is give us confidence to buy some things ourselves and I remember how proud you were that you’d ‘taught us well’, without us even realising!
